Mother of Two Trying to Teach Her Daughters How to ‘Skip’ on TikTok (Exclusive)

  • Bonnie Lee’s daughters recently won prizes and rode Skip-It at an arcade
  • The girls were confused about the toy and how to use it, but my mother remembered
  • Lee took a cute video of himself teaching his daughters over time, and they finally got it!

An arcade prize inspired a trip down memory lane for a mother of two who had the chance to pass on the magic of the past to her little girls.

Bonnie Lee on TikTok @bonnieleetoxHe went viral after sharing a video of himself introducing his daughters, ages 6 and 9, to Skip-It.

The children’s toy, which was first introduced in the 60s and became popular with digitalized versions in the 80s and 90s, is worn around the ankle. The player must swing the tied ball around his legs and jump over the ball each time it arrives.

Lee told PEOPLE that her two gymnast daughters were stunned by their new toys at first.

“We were actually on vacation and went to an arcade. It was time to cash in tickets for prizes and I saw this. ‘Take a Skip! This is so much fun!’ I said. My oldest asked, ‘What is Skip?’ he said.

“I told the cashier, ‘We’ll get the Skip-It,'” he says, laughing.

The mother of two calls herself a “Hop and hula hoop expert” and found herself getting right back to work as if no time had passed at all.

“My cousins and I would spend hours doing both. It was our favorite! So when I went to show the girls how to do it, it was like riding a bike; my body knew what to do. But when the girls tried, I couldn’t do it.”

Lee tried to explain this to his daughters, who asked how he learned how to do this.

“I decided to shoot a movie while I was teaching them, and I realized I was humming the jingle while filming. I realized that’s how I learned it! A commercial!”

They kept going, but their first Skip-It broke. Determined to get rid of it, they ordered new ones and said, “They finally got it! They were so proud, and so was I,” says the mother, adding with a laugh: “I’m still the best, though.”

Lee says it’s “the best feeling” to see her daughters enjoy something that brings them so much joy at their age.

“I had a wonderful childhood, and days playing with my cousins are some of my favorite memories,” he shares.

“Watching your kids do all the things you did when you were a kid and seeing that exact moment come back somehow heals you. Not to mention, kids today love their phones and iPads and they don’t have the same childhoods we had, so it seemed to me like that with them It’s nice to share something.”

By shooting, the creative mom says she’s grateful: “With them, I’m able to create this living scrapbook that I can look back on.”

Commenters can relate to the nostalgic feeling.

“Seeing the comments made this one of my favorite posts! It was so funny, all these people sharing their memories or experiences with Skip-It,” says Lee.

“They reminded me of little things I had forgotten about Skip-It, like the Skip-It from the ’90s that literally shattered your shin when it hit you, so when the bench starts shaking, you better jump,” he says with a laugh.

“It was like chatting about the ‘good old days’ with friends or family and that made me happy! I think this post made a lot of people happy too; seeing something fun and positive and reminding people of their youth.”
