Authorities say an East Brookfield man died in a house fire

A man who uses a wheelchair died in an overnight house fire in East Brookfield, authorities said.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m., multiple calls to 911 reported flames coming from a home on West Main Street, according to the state fire marshal’s office. When firefighters arrived, the detached house was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters found the man inside and removed him from the home, but he was fatally injured, authorities said.

“On behalf of the East Brookfield Fire Department, I want to express our condolences to the man’s family,” East Brookfield Fire Chief David Messier said in a statement. “This is a very sad day for them and for the community,” he said.

State Fire Marshal Jon Davine said investigators did not find any working smoke alarms in the home.

“Please take a few minutes today to make sure you and your loved ones are protected by operating smoke alarms on every level of your home,” he said.

The Coroner is expected to investigate the man’s death while fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire. The house is expected to be a total loss.
