Body of missing family member found at site of house explosion in South Jordan

The body of a missing family member was found at the scene of an explosion at a house in South Jordan.

South Jordan City representatives stated that teams were dispatched to the area of 10500 S. 3200 W. upon receiving news of the explosion at around 15:00 on Wednesday.

Authorities said there was “serious damage” to the house and damage to neighboring houses as well. Neighbors were evacuated as a precaution.

Hours after the explosion, authorities reported that they had found the body they were looking for. The person passed away.

“This house 150, 200 feet away blew up, exploded, and it’s hard to believe it,” neighbor Todd Christensen said.

His wife was home at the time of the explosion and reached him immediately after calling 911.

“He usually doesn’t call me during the day,” he said. “When I saw the phone call, I wondered what was going on.”

He told her that his neighbors’ house was gone.

“It felt like someone had hit the garage door and as soon as he got out he saw a huge plume of smoke in the air,” Christensen said. “There was a bit of panic in what he said and I could see he was nervous. “He didn’t know what was happening at that moment.”

While firefighters carefully examined the debris, they began searching for a missing family member.

“We are still working on the PD family,” West Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner said. “We are still working on every angle and every option to determine where the other individual might be.”

The complexity of the fire was further increased by the difficulty of accessing parts of the heavily damaged house.

Neighbors could only watch as crews worked on the demolition.

“I hope and pray that everyone is well; It looks like complete devastation,” Christensen said.

Fire officials said there was no indication that the explosion was suspicious, but the cause was unknown.

The debris field spreads for hundreds of meters in all directions.

Local, state and ATF resources are continuing the investigation and authorities expect to be in the area overnight.
