Family injured in multi-vehicle I-96 crash was returning from Ford Field marching band competition – Macomb Daily

Mt. Mt. was involved in a horrific crash Saturday night east of Lansing. A fundraiser has been created to help the Pleasant family.

The VanHorn family was returning from a high school band competition at Ford Field when four people were killed and 17 injured in a crash on I-96 in eastern Ingham County.

According to police, the accident occurred around 11:40 p.m. near Webberville. DTE Energy had just finished installing power lines when it reopened the highway. The vehicles were stopped in a line as they waited for traffic to calm down after a semi-trailer crashed into the vehicles.

Three Lansing residents in the Chevy Trax were killed in the crash; One was 20 years old, one was 43 years old, and one was 47 years old, all women. A 29-year-old Carson City resident in the Ford F-150 was also killed.

A company spokesman for DTE Energy disputed the timing of the study.

“If we’re going to do something like this on the highway, we’re going to do it at the time when there’s the least amount of traffic on the highway because the highway needs to be closed for both the safety of the people traveling and the safety of the people,” Rosso said. “We are trying to determine,” he said.

The bridge will be inspected by the Michigan Department of Education, and westbound I-96 and M-52 will be closed indefinitely until inspections are completed.

On Monday afternoon, MDOT stated that “two lanes of eastbound I-96 will be closed at Chilson Road to allow crews to safely move the temporary barrier in Howell.”

The VanHorn family, who was brutally hit from behind in the accident, was rescued from the wreckage after their vehicle burst into flames.

Sam, Kim, and Alex VanHorn were immediately transported to Sparrow Hospital for treatment and evaluated overnight.

While Sam was taken to hospital, the other two were discharged.

The three feel like even though the injuries were extensive, they “received incredible care throughout the process.” Kim says “we have a long road to recovery ahead” but support levels remain high. Kim’s husband Sam is not doing well right now. Alex is still in the hospital while she is on bed rest at home with a broken lower spine. Kim suffered numerous bruises, scrapes, burns and cuts, as well as a large hematoma on her leg. The family has follow-up appointments this week to determine next steps.

Charlene Dengler, Kim’s aunt and Sam’s older sister, started a GoFundMe to support her family during this difficult time. Currently, the fundraiser’s goal is $15,000; As of Monday afternoon, $11,380 had been raised. By 3:30 p.m., the amount he had raised was approximately $15,500, and 321 people had donated, exceeding the goal.
