Devon and Cornwall Police fireworks warning ahead of Bonfire Night

People in Devon and Cornwall are being warned about the responsible use of fireworks ahead of Bonfire Night on Tuesday.

Fireworks are fun for many people, but they can also be distressing for some people and animals, police said.

He said “ongoing issues” with anti-social behavior needed to be reported.

Firefighters, HM Coastguard and the National Grid and Environment Agency also urged people to use fireworks responsibly.

Lucy Draycott, from Falmouth Coastguard, said people planning a large fireworks display near the beach should notify the coastguard.

“Sometimes red fireworks are often confused with distress flares,” he said.

National Grid said setting off fireworks too close to electrical infrastructure could cause serious injuries and power outages.

“Smoke and heat from bonfires can also damage power lines and pose a danger to those nearby,” the statement said.

“Therefore, it is important that celebrations are held away from energy networks.”

The Environment Agency said only dry, untreated and unpainted wood should be used for bonfires, along with a small amount of paper or cardboard.

Burning the wrong type of waste could lead to fines of up to £50,000, it said, and people were urged to check for animals such as hedgehogs before lighting bonfires.

Kate Saint, from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said people should attend organized bonfire and firework events whenever possible.

“It’s a lot safer,” he said.

“It also reduces potential pressure on fire and rescue services at a time of year that can be extremely busy.”
