An 18-year-old motorcyclist died in hospital Tuesday after crashing his bike at East Speedway downtown Monday night.

Athen Riley was traveling westbound on the Speedway faster than the 35 mile per hour speed limit when he swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle traveling the wrong way, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department. The other vehicle was trying to turn left on North Stone Boulevard.

Riley, who swerved to avoid the car, went off the road and crashed into a concrete structure, the news release said. The impact threw Riley into another concrete structure, the news release said. He was wearing a helmet at the time.

Riley was transported to Banner University Medical Center on Tuesday and died from his injuries, the news release said.

The investigation continues.
