Latest US elections: Harris warns voters in closing speech that election ‘is a choice between a country rooted in freedom and chaos’ | US News

Harris says the election is a choice between ‘a country based on freedom and a country ruled by chaos’

Kamala Harris begins her speech about the attack, warning voters that the election is a choice between “a country rooted in freedom for every American and a country ruled by chaos and division.”

While he addresses the fact that many people (an expected 51 million) have already voted, he says he knows others are “still thinking about who to vote for.”

“I will talk to everyone about the election and the risks in this election,” he says.

Harris’ campaign estimates more than 75,000 people attended the Democratic nominee’s speech.

Harris targets Trump for January 6

He’s speaking from the Ellipse near the White House, where Donald Trump emerged in January 2021 to spread false claims that the presidential election was stolen.

Ms Harris says: “We know who Donald Trump is; he is the person who stood on this very spot nearly four years ago and sent an armed mob to the US Capitol to subvert the will of the people in a free and fair election.”

He says the country is “consumed with so much division, chaos and mutual distrust” but it doesn’t have to be that way.

“We need to stop pointing fingers and start locking arms,” he adds.

“It’s time to turn a new page to the drama.”

At one point he calls him a “little tyrant” and a “wannabe dictator.”

Harris admits people are still ‘getting to know’ her

Ms. Harris also takes time to acknowledge that this is not a “typical campaign” for the White House and that many people are “still getting to know her.”

He describes his background as a prosecutor and says he always had a “protective instinct.”

“There’s something about people being treated unfairly… it bothers me frankly, I don’t like it,” he adds.

Trump will have an ‘enemy list’ – Harris will have a ‘to-do list’

Finally, calling for support, Ms. Harris said she would always listen, even to those who did not vote for her.

“I will work every day to build consensus and reach compromise to get things done,” he adds.

If elected, Mr Trump warns, he will enter the White House with a “list of enemies” while he himself will enter with a “to-do list full of priorities”.

“My presidency will be different because the challenges we face are different,” he adds, saying the “biggest challenge” right now is reducing costs.

Tax cuts, housing benefit and immigration

He promises to offer tax cuts to workers and the middle class, saying he believes in the “dignity of work.”

It also reiterated its commitment to offering first-time buyers help with deposits and building affordable housing.

On immigration, Ms. Harris said she would “swiftly deport” people who entered the country illegally.

“Politicians should stop treating immigration as an issue that will scare away votes in elections and instead treat it as a serious problem,” he adds.

“I’m not looking to score political points, I’m looking to make progress.

“Unlike Donald Trump, I don’t believe people who disagree with me are the enemy. He wants to put them in jail, and I’ll give them a seat at the table.”

He concludes his speech with these words: “Each of you has the power to turn the page and begin writing the next chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told.”
