Asbille plays Iris, a mother mourning the loss of her teenage son Mateo, who died after slipping and falling off the edge of a cliff in a tragic hiking accident. In the first scene, Iris returns to the spot where Matteo fell, holding a small toy boat that the young boy cherishes. Although Iris never mentions her intentions, it is clear that she plans to end her own life at the same place where her son died.

Richard (Wittrock), a well-spoken, good man, insists that he, too, is seeking solitude in the mountains. He manages to gain her trust and literally push her over the edge in the process. They drive back to the parking lot together, but when they get there, Iris sees Richard blocking the front of her car. She advances towards him, ostensibly to help, but instead shocks him with a stun gun disguised as an umbrella.

As Richard drives them to his cabin, Iris wakes up inside his car and pulls a small knife from her pocket, attacking Richard and causing the car to crash. The two fight for a moment, but just as Iris is about to escape, Richard reveals that he injected her with a paralyzing substance during their fight. It will go into effect in minutes.

Iris escapes into the forest with Richard in pursuit. Beginning to lose control of her muscles and abilities, Iris throws herself into the river and manages to float on her back against the current until she reaches the shore. He stumbles upon the property of a widowed farmer who finds Iris mowing his lawn. He lets her in and is about to call the police when Richard, who introduces himself as Andrew, comes to the door.

Richard claims he was in a car accident and lost his wife. The farmer lets Richard in, but the confrontation turns violent and Richard stabs the old man to death before setting the house on fire. Afraid of burning to death, Iris reveals herself to Richard, who carries her to the farmer’s pickup truck, and they flee as the sirens approach.

As they drive away, Iris overhears a conversation between Richard, his daughter, and his wife, in which she discovers that the rest of his family is going to the cabin for the weekend. Panicking, Richard stops at a gas station to refuel, leaving Iris alone in the truck. A little boy, whom Iris simply assumes to be Matteo, appears at the window and asks her questions. The young boy’s mother drags him away but is noticeably disturbed by Iris’ inert state.

As the policeman approached his window, Iris weakly whispered “Help me”, causing Richard to grab a large towing winch and beat the officer to death.

When she reaches the surface, Iris takes a deep breath and sinks to the bottom of the boat. We cut to several shots of the still water and the trees surrounding it, implying that Iris may not have escaped her predicament until we see her leap out of the water. Matteo’s red plastic boat guides him towards the shore. Iris pulls herself onto the dock and waits for the strength in her hands and feet to slowly return. As he does so, he hears Richard’s pained breathing from further down the beach.

Iris goes to the mortally wounded Richard, who is drowning in his own blood after being dumped on the shore. Iris stands next to him for a moment and looks into his eyes. “Thank you,” Iris said to the attacker. Then he walks away, letting Richard die a slow and painful death.

The final shot shows Iris returning to the spot where Matteo died and stepping back onto the rock where we first met him. Despite the unimaginable tragedy she has experienced, we get the sense that Iris will not only see another day, but will live for herself.

This seems like a strange choice considering everything Richard has put Iris through, but Iris thanks him before leaving her to die on the shore.

When Richard first met Iris, she was trying to show empathy for her loss of her son, telling a story about how terrible her last words to her beloved Chloe were; It was so terrible that he wouldn’t repeat it until I said so. Later, when Iris is able to talk but mostly paralyzed in the truck, he explains that Chloe’s last words to her when she was about to die in the horrific car crash for which she was responsible were “Thank you.” He was hospitalized for two months after the accident and had a moment of “clarity” about who he was: God.

Iris’s “Thank you” at the end is certainly seen as an act of revenge – for herself, and perhaps for Chloe as well – but the experience with Richard has led to her own epiphany: She wants to live. last shot don’t move It shows Iris standing at the spot where her son died with a determined look, rather than the grief and despair she felt when she started the film.
