A man who recently graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy is charged with driving under the influence after allegedly crashing into another car Sunday night in Tewksbury, WBZ reports.

James Doran, 27, is charged with operating under the influence and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, according to court records. He denied both charges.

Tewksbury police responded to the crash on Main Street near Clark Road around 11 p.m. Sunday night. According to WBZ. Police said the registered car Doran was driving crashed into another vehicle, and responding officers reported that the 27-year-old man and another man in his car were unsteady on their feet, had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.

Court documents detail that Doran’s passenger initially claimed he was driving, but officers found the man’s phone on the passenger-side floor, according to WBZ. Damage to the passenger side windshield also allegedly matched the cut on the man’s head.

Doran allegedly later told police he had been driving and had “a few drinks.” He allegedly refused a breath test and a field sobriety test, according to WBZ.
