HSE Mid-West Winter Vaccination Program begins

The HSE Mid-West Winter Vaccination Program begins with free flu and COVID-19 vaccines being made available to recommended groups.

Both flu and Covid-19 vaccines are recommended for people aged 60 and over, healthcare workers, pregnant women or anyone with long-term health problems.

Both vaccines are available from participating GPs and pharmacies and can be administered at the same time. Healthcare worker vaccination clinics will also be located at many workplaces across the country.

HSE vaccination teams will also provide vaccinations to homebound patients, as well as people living in residential care facilities, including nursing homes.

Public Health HSE Mid-West has recently managed a small number of acute respiratory outbreaks in the region, including a major influenza outbreak involving more than 15 cases in a long-term care facility.

HSE Mid-West Regional Director of Public Health Dr. Mai Mannix said: “We have already seen early signs of respiratory illness with the rise of flu and COVID-19 in society and in our healthcare services in recent weeks. Last winter, more than 4,000 people died of influenza across the country and more than 7,000 people died of Covid-19.” Unless our healthcare workers, the elderly, and our vulnerable and at-risk population are vaccinated against flu and COVID-19, our soon-to-be busy winter season will be exacerbated by the treatment of very sick people in wards, inpatient care, and at home.

“Our immunity declines over time, so it is important to get vaccinated this winter to stay protected and increase your protection. It is important that everyone who is eligible gets both their free flu and Covid-19 booster vaccinations now to stay protected this winter. “People should also be reassured that it is safe to receive both vaccines at the same time, free of charge, through participating GP surgeries and pharmacies.”

HSE Mid-West Regional Clinical Director Dr. Catherine Peters said: “I urge everyone who is eligible to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to protect yourself and your family in the coming months. This year we have made the flu vaccine available to more people, making it free for everyone aged 60 and over. Anyone with long-term health problems, pregnant women It is recommended that women, health and care workers be vaccinated against both flu and Covid-19. The nasal flu vaccine, which will be available starting next week, is recommended for children between the ages of 2-17.

“We know that some people have become sick with COVID-19 in the last few months. If you are offered the COVID-19 vaccine, you should wait at least three months between getting COVID-19 and getting your COVID-19 vaccine. But don’t put off your vaccinations all winter; “Get your flu vaccine now and get your Covid-19 vaccine when the time comes.”

Sandra Broderick, HSE Mid-West Regional Chief Executive, is encouraging all healthcare workers to take advantage of free flu and COVID-19 vaccinations through staff clinics, their GP or pharmacies.

He said: “I welcome the positive and encouraging start to the winter vaccination program among HSE Mid-West staff in recent weeks. We know there will be busy periods throughout this winter which will inevitably present challenges for our frontline staff. Respiratory diseases such as flu and COVID-19 Managing and preventing the spread of infections across our healthcare will be a pressure point. Winter vaccination is our best form of protection, not only for healthcare workers but also for the patients and people we serve and care for every day. It is a simple act of solidarity that will protect our colleagues and the public. .”
