This revolution would not have been achieved so easily if the subway had not been set on fire or the police had not been attacked, Hasibul Islam, coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, said during a talk show on DBC television channel. .

The video of the programme, titled “Projotone Bangladesh”, was released on DBC’s YouTube channel on Saturday. The debate focused on the following topic: “How compelling is national unity?” and featured BNP leader Nilufar Chowdhury Moni alongside Hasibul.

During the talk show, host Jhumi Rahman asked Hasibul about the controversy surrounding the president’s resignation. “When you were sworn in before the president, wasn’t that a compromise?” he asked.

Answering the question, Hasibul said, “Look, there was no compromise at that time. We did not declare that our revolution, which led to the establishment of the government, was over.

“We underlined three things in our single-point demand: the destruction of fascism and the complete elimination of the fascist system. At that time, only the destruction of fascism was achieved. There are two remaining goals, that is, our struggle continues. Our revolution is not over yet.”

Detailing the issue, Hasibul continued as follows: “Whether we call it a revolution or a mass uprising, it did not comply with any constitutional rules or laws. If we had followed the law, these revolutions would not have happened.

“In this case, all revolutions in history took place outside the constitution and law. If the subway had not been set on fire and the police had not been attacked, this revolution could not have been achieved so easily. The collapse of fascism could not have been guaranteed.”

He defended what was done during the movement and said, “I therefore believe that it makes no sense to criticize deviations from the law in a revolution or uprising.”

Hasibul also criticized the BNP for, in his words, not being effective in resisting the fascist regime.

“If the BNP had properly demonstrated its capabilities in the last 15 years, fascism would not have been able to oppress the people of the country in this way for so long,” he said.

Reiterating his commitment to the movement, Hasibul said, “We ensured the destruction of fascism because we carried out this movement with passion. We want to remain uncompromising regarding the resignation of the president.”

“The people of Bangladesh do not want to accept talks about creating a vacancy in constitutional positions or a political vacuum. The resignation of the president has now become a life and death demand of the people of Bangladesh.”
