Life-saving girl awarded guild pin by Guernsey College

A 12-year-old girl who saved a woman from drowning was given an award for her bravery.

Juliette Broad was awarded the guild pin by her school, the Ladies’ College in St Peter Port, for her bravery in saving another’s life.

Juliette and her friend Lillia in August Sue swam to Norreys’ aid After losing consciousness while swimming in Havelet Bay.

This award is given for the second time after 25 years.

Juliette said she and Lillia, who attends a different school, jumped into the water and sat on the wall waiting for the next jump when a woman shouted and told them to help a woman in the sea.

“It took me a few seconds to realize what was going on and I thought: ‘If no one’s going to do it, we’ll have to leave,’” Juliette said.

The girls swam towards Miss Norreys, who was floating face down in the sea.

Juliette continued: “He was unconscious and lying there lifeless.

“I turned her over and tried to hold her head up with Lillia’s body in place.”

Juliette said it was “a little scary” for Ms Norreys to receive medical attention on shore, but she was relieved to meet her weeks after the incident and see that she was doing better.

He said it was “really exciting” to receive the guild pin.
