Philadelphia Union Goalkeeper Holden Trent Dies at 25

Philadelphia Union player Holden Trent has passed away. He was 25 years old.

Major League Soccer club on Saturday, October 26 announced that the goalkeeper had died earlier that day.

“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking death of Holden Trent,” the union said in a statement. he wrote. “Although he was a great player and a fierce competitor, more importantly he was a devoted son, brother, fiancée and teammate who made those around him better.”

The statement continued: “He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and we will miss him greatly. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, fiancée and friends.”

The team said it would not release further details about Trent’s cause of death out of respect for his friends and family.

Originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent was selected 28th overall in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft after graduating from High Point University, where he was the Big South Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021 and 2022.

ESPN Trent is yet to make his first team debut for the club, but has made six appearances for the Union affiliate in the last season. He wore jersey number 13 in the team.

MLS issues its own statement on Trent’s death in x (formerly Twitter), “Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Union and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic death of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent.”

“As a young goalkeeper with a bright future, Trent has demonstrated determination and professionalism every day, contributing to the close-knit goaltending unit in Philadelphia,” the statement continued.

“We extend our deepest condolences to his fiancée, his family and friends, his teammates, and the entire Philadelphia Union community,” the league said. “MLS is coordinating with the club to provide players and their family members with the resources and support they need during this tragic time.”
