US Elections 2024: Michelle Obama warned at her rally in Michigan that women’s lives would be in danger if Donald Trump comes to power again, and called on men to support Kamala Harris in her campaign to become the first female president.

Michelle Obama described attacks on abortion rights as a harbinger of harmful restrictions on women’s health care, AP reports.

Obama warned that some men might consider voting for Trump out of frustration with slow progress, but “your anger doesn’t exist in a vacuum.”

“If we don’t make this choice right, your wife, your daughter, your mother, we women will be the collateral damage of your anger,” Obama said. “So are you, as men, ready to look into the eyes of the women and children you love and say that you support this attack on our security?”

The rally in Kalamazoo was Michelle Obama’s first campaign appearance since speaking at the Democratic National Convention in the summer. The report stated that the support given to Harris was intense and sincere.

“She showed that she was ready in every respect,” the former first lady said. “The real question is: Are we ready for this moment as a country?”

Obama added: “Don’t believe Kamala’s lies that we don’t know who she is or what she represents. This is someone who understands you, all of you.”

Although Obama has often been a hesitant campaigner, he expressed no reservations in his speech Saturday, blending political commentary with personal reflections. He shared his concerns about the country and expressed confusion about why the presidential race remains competitive.

“At night I wonder, ‘What’s going on in the world?’ “I was lying awake thinking,” he said.

In an emotional tone, Obama touched upon the challenges women face in understanding and caring for their bodies, from menstrual cycles to menopause. He also drew attention to the dangers of birth and emphasized how important an instant decision can be for the lives of both the mother and the baby.

“I ask all of you from the core of my being to take our lives seriously,” Obama implored.

Taking the stage after Obama, Harris assured the crowd that she would put their interests first and compared herself to Trump, who only cares about his own interests.

“There is a longing in our country for a president who does not constantly look in the mirror, but sees people who understand you and will fight for you,” he said.

After the rally, Harris went with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to Trak Houz Bar & Grill, where they drank locally brewed beer.

“I want to have everything he has,” Harris said.

“We are facing a health crisis in America that affects people of all backgrounds and genders,” Harris told reporters before visiting the doctor’s office.

On Friday, Harris joined Beyoncé in Houston, and on Thursday she campaigned with former President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen in Atlanta. This level of celebrity support far exceeds what Republican candidate Trump has been able to garner this year. However, there is no assurance that this will help Harris in the tight race for the White House; because Hillary Clinton also faced defeat in 2016, despite pumping up the crowd with musical performances and prominent allies. Trump rejected efforts by Harris to leverage her star power for his campaign.

“Kamala is at a dance party with Beyoncé,” the former president said Friday in Traverse City, Michigan. Trump held a rally in Novi, a suburb of Detroit, on Saturday before an event in State College, Pennsylvania.

Saturday marked the first day of early in-person voting across Michigan; More than 1.4 million ballots have already been submitted, accounting for 20% of registered voters. During Clinton’s campaign against Trump, Michelle Obama motivated Democrats with the slogan “when they fall, we rise.”

But this year at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, he took a tougher approach. He accused Trump of “doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies in place of real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better.”

While Harris was with Obama in Michigan, President Joe Biden visited the North American International Labor Union in Pittsburgh. Harris noted that she once walked the picket line with the United Auto Workers — “she’s got a backbone like a ramrod” — while Trump undermined organized labor, the AP reported.

“He sees unions as a tool that gets in the way of individuals’ accumulation of wealth,” Biden said. “More than any other race you’ve been in, it’s in the interest of the working class to defeat Donald Trump.”

Biden’s remarks to the mostly male audience referenced the gender divide that has been a consistent feature of this year’s presidential race.

Speaking about Trump, Biden said, “I’m telling you the truth, he is pathetic as a man.”
