Brad Marchand’s overtime goal puts Bruins ahead of Maple Leafs – Boston Herald

BOSTON (AP) — Brad Marchand scored his first goal of the season 2:26 into overtime and the Boston Bruins ended their three-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

David Pastrnak had a strong goal, and Justin Brazeau and Mark Kastelic scored 36 seconds apart for Boston in the second period. This was the Bruins’ eighth straight regular season win over Toronto.

Auston Matthews hit Mitch Marner’s shot from the point with 1:17 left in regulation for the Maple Leafs. Matthew Knies and Morgan Rielly also scored for Toronto, which has lost three in a row.

This was the teams’ first meeting since Boston defeated Toronto in Game 7 of the opening round of the playoffs last spring.

takeaway

Maple Leafs: Defensemen had a few meltdowns deep in their own half, which led to two quick scores for Boston in the second period. For a team that has struggled to score early goals this season, they cannot give up easy chances.

Bruins: For the first time in his coaching career in Boston, Jim Montgomery entered a season with a losing record. The Bruins started 17-2-0 in 2022-23 in his first as coach and started 9-0-1 last year.

key moment

Matthews made a poor clearing pass and Pastrnak and Marchand went hard on goal and Marchand hit a backhand for the win.

Key statistics

For the first time since 2010–11, his second season in the league, Marchand failed to score in the first eight matches of the season and scored in the ninth match. He also assisted Pastrnak’s powerful goal in the second period.
