Waters and Randle dominate Gold Coast for Tickford one-two – Australian Associated Press

Cam Waters kept his slim Supercars title hopes alive by winning the inaugural Gold Coast 500, which he helped Tickford teammate Thomas Randle to victory.

Pole sitter Waters blocked multiple pass attempts from front rower Richie Stanaway to lead from start to finish in Saturday’s 85-lap race at the Surfers Paradise street circuit.

Sitting fourth in the standings, Waters’ fourth race win of the year brings him within 167 points of third-place Chaz Mostert.

Randle showed his class to move up four places to second as he made a quality pass against Broc Feeney on lap 36 to finish one-two on Tickford.

Mostert briefly held second place before gearbox trouble opened the door for Randle.

Young gun Broc Feeney finished third, while Mostert crossed the finish line in tenth place.

Grove driver Stanaway settled for ninth due to a balance problem in the car, while his young teammate Matt Payne finished fourth.

Feeney’s Red Bull teammate and series leader Will Brown remains at the top despite a disappointing seventh-place finish.

Brown started the race in 11th place after crashing in qualifying earlier in the day.

An in-form James Golding suffered a nightmare visit to the pit lane, dropping from third to 16th after the pit crew had difficulty replacing his left rear wheel.

Cam Hill stole the show for a moment when he reversed down the runway into the escape route.

Hill had damaged both sides of his Matt Stone Racing Camaro after a freak brake jump caused it to spin at the chicane.

He finished 23rd out of 24 drivers.

Reigning series leader and newly elected Bathurst 1000 champion Brodie Kostecki finished fifth, while Erebus teammate Jack Le Brocq finished last.

Le Brocq moved to the back of the group after hitting the wall on the first lap and was almost four laps down after requiring repairs.
