Houston ISD bond proposal faces strong headwinds at polls

Second week of intense early voting in crowded region Houston Community College campus in the West Loop.

Resolutions for citizens to vote on include “yes” or “no” on a $4.4 billion Houston ISD bond proposal to replace or renovate 40 aging schools, as well as invest significantly in new technology.

Selectman Doug White says he doesn’t want to leave children and educators in dilapidated facilities because the district’s teachers union is at war with state-appointed superintendent Mike Miles.

“It’s not perfect. We don’t know exactly what this will be allocated to, but it’s clear schools need investment and improved infrastructure. I’ll vote for that without great enthusiasm.” said White.

On Tuesday, FOX 26 encountered many more voters who saw the bond’s approval as validation of the state’s takeover of the district and Superintendent Miles’ questionable leadership.

“He got rid of the teachers. He got rid of the principals. Yeah, maybe he had to get rid of some of those teachers, maybe some of those principals, but not all of them,” said voter Denise Weinberg.

“I have a lot of teachers in my family who oppose this and I understand why,” said voter Maureen Kilgore.

“They (teachers) are on the front lines and they see what’s going on in schools and it’s not good,” said voter Emily Smith.

“No one seems to support this except the fat guy in the ad,” voter Steven Johnson said.

And there are those upset about the size of the bond, which if approved would be the largest in Texas history.

“Maybe we don’t need to have a bond. I agree, it’s nice to have brand new buildings. But sometimes if you put money into what you have, even if it’s expensive, that means you don’t have to put money in.” It’s a whole new building,” said Ben Daily, a voter who opposes the bond.
