Want an unforgettable Halloween? Try international candies

(NewsNation) — If your Halloween memory is filled with the “usual suspects,” maybe it’s time to think outside the bar. Candy bar, that is.

Online candy sites and international markets in many cities can be sources of Halloween favors that will make your home a hotspot for trick-or-treaters. Or something to avoid, depending on what you choose.

“As a kid, I vowed to be an adult who would give out giant chocolate bars or really special candies,” she wrote Kat ThompsonAssociate editor of the food and restaurant website Eater. “No peppermint candies, tiny caramel hard candies, or tragic pennies allowed,” he added.

The challenge is finding individually packaged candies. While you may be tempted to DIY and pack some bulk-bought desserts, hand-packaged Halloween treats have often gone the way of homemade treats. These are the first things parents find in their kids’ treat bags and throw away.

The other challenge is cost. Online stores and boutique stores charge a lot of prices for imported candies. Amazon’s candy pages often include a breakdown of prices per ounce or per item.

Here are some international candies available in US stores and online:

Bon Bon Tramp

Hailing from Colombia, these lollipops have bubble gum at the center and come in a variety of tropical flavors.

It’s the British version of the big bags of “fun-sized” American sweets and includes Cadbury’s best-selling products such as Dairy Milk, Twirl and Wispa.

Amira Tamarind Candy

Hard candies from Thailand boast “the perfect balance of sweet and sour with a slight whisper of salt,” according to Thompson.

It might not be fair to include German gummies, which have been wildly popular since the company opened a 500,000-square-foot factory in southern Wisconsin last year.

Hello Chews

Hi-Chews, Japan’s version of starbursts, became popular in the United States thanks to Mormon missionaries who brought them from Japan. In addition to the usual fruit flavors, Hi-Chew is constantly testing new and seasonal flavors.

It’s a creamy, milk-flavored confection from China with a “unique chewy texture.” You might want to consider whether kids in the neighborhood would agree with this.

Variety Packs

If you can’t stick to one country or candy, online operators offer large packages of candies, chocolates and snacks from around the world.
