How does Airbnb plan to intervene in Halloween house parties?

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — Airbnb is cracking down on house parties in Arizona and across the U.S. ahead of Halloween weekend

Some anti-party defenses include blocking certain one-night and two-night stays during the holiday weekend. They use machine learning technology to detect and reject these potentially high-risk requests.

Some indicators of high risk include whether accommodations were booked at the last minute, length of trip, and distance from listing.

“The vast majority of Airbnb guests are responsible travelers, and problems are rare. “We want to support our hosts and local communities by trying to further reduce the risk of nuisance parties, and we believe these measures will help us do just that,” said Tara Bunch, Airbnb’s global head of operations.

Last year, Airbnb enacted a similar “defense strategy.” The company says its systems prevented more than 31,000 people across the U.S. from booking short-term stays over the Halloween weekend, and they saw the number of parties reported decrease.

In Phoenix in particular, these defenses deterred nearly 400 people from booking an Airbnb last Halloween. Last year, 3,900 people were deterred across Arizona.

Airbnb has 24/7 service Neighborhood Support Line where residents can report listing concerns to the company. Homeowners also have access to a security hotline to report suspicious parties in progress.
