2 people died in a traffic accident that occurred overnight

Two people died in separate hit-and-run crashes in Philadelphia early Friday morning, police said.

Around 1:30 a.m., a 67-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a man driving in the 200 block of North 63rd Street in West Philadelphia, Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore said. He said the man, whom police did not identify, was pronounced dead at Lankenau Medical Center around 3:30 a.m.

It is unclear what caused the fatal crash; Police are still looking for video footage, Vanore said. Police said they believe the driver who hit the pedestrian was driving a light-colored, possibly white, SUV.

An hour later, around 2:30 a.m. in the Tacony neighborhood, a person driving westbound at a high rate of speed in a dark-colored SUV in the 4800 block of Levick Street struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street and then began fleeing the scene. “Torresdale Boulevard,” Vanore said.

The pedestrian, who police did not immediately identify, was pronounced dead at 2:57 a.m., he said.

Hit-and-run accidents continue to occur in the city at a rate of more than one per day. As a result, the police department increased enforcement on the city’s busy streets.

According to police data, there were 473 hit-and-run accidents in Philadelphia as of October 15. Data shows that 36 of those were fatal. In the same period last year, there were 588 such accidents, 26 of which were fatal.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
