Yuki Kawamura’s Moment Against Bronny James in Lakers-Grizzlies Goes Viral

Memphis Grizzlies rookie guard Yuki Kawamura made a name for himself early in his career, and he added to that excitement when he was paired with Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James on Wednesday night.

In the match against the Lakers rookie, the son of NBA superstar LeBron James, Kawamura managed to make moves and draw a foul against the 55th overall pick, earned the right to go to the free throw line and tally his first NBA points.

The moment went viral on social media, with this post from NBA Japan racking up over 1.2 million views and over 13,800 likes. Fans of Kawamura, the Grizzlies, and basketball in general have enjoyed seeing the young guard’s success.

It took until his sixth game, but the 6-foot-4 rookie from Japan was finally able to score his first points in the NBA. Kawamura, who is currently on a two-way contract with the Grizzlies and splits time between the Memphis Hustle and the Grizzlies, built a significant following early in his NBA career.

On the “X” social media platform, Kawamura has more than 200,000 followers, many of whom have followed the point guard since his time in Japan.

Kawamura is only one of two Japanese-born players to play and score in an NBA game this season; The only other player was Los Angeles Lakers forward Rui Hachimura, who missed last night’s game due to illness.

But Kawamura isn’t the only rookie making noise on the Grizzlies; Jaylen Wells and Zach Edey are two of four rookies averaging double-digit scoring on the season. Wells finished Wednesday’s game with 20 points, while Edey had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Grizzlies will be back on the court on Friday when they host the Washington Wizards.
