A. Whale known to many in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest will get the star treatment in a new podcast this month.

Serial Productions and the New York Times will publish:The Good Whale is a six-part podcast series detailing Keiko’s storyIt once lived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport.

The beloved killer whale starred in the movie “Free Willy” in 1993, after which he became world famous.

Serial Productions, which produces popular podcasts like “Serial” and “S-Town,” has more than 743 million downloads.

“The Good Whale” will be narrated by Daniel Alarcón, who will take an in-depth look at Keiko’s journey from captivity to the wild.

Additionally, Keiko’s story will be accompanied by a “musical dream” with an original song sung by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul with Mark Sonnenblick and performed by “Hadestown” star Jordan Fisher.

Who was Keiko?

Keiko was a male orca captured in the Atlantic Ocean near Iceland in 1979 when he was 2 years old. It was soon sold to the Icelandic Aquarium in Hafnarfjörður.

In 1982 he was sold to Marineland in Ontario, Canada, where he began performing for the public for the first time. In 1985, it was sold to Reino Aventura, an amusement park in Mexico City, Mexico.

In 1993, Orca played Willy in the movie “Free Willy”. The film grossed approximately $8 million domestically in its opening weekend, grossing an estimated $153 million.

How long did Keiko live at the Oregon Coast Aquarium?

When Keiko was discovered living in a small tank at a Mexico City amusement park, public outcry and millions of dollars donated through the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation brought him to the Oregon Coast Aquarium to be rehabilitated with a later plan. release it back into the wild.

Keiko lived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium from January 1996 to September 1998, during which time she was trained and prepared for reintegration into the wild. It brought in approximately 2.5 million visitors during its stay.

What happened to Keiko after she was released into the wild?

Keiko was released into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Iceland in 2002, becoming the first captive orca to be returned to the wild.

He would catch people’s attention by briefly joining a pod of orcas and eventually going to Norway on his own.

On December 12, 2003, Keiko contracted pneumonia and died in Taknes Bay, Norway, at the age of 27.
