Her ex-boyfriend is behind bars.

And no one can understand the horrific attack on tiny Temiskaming Beach, about 150 kilometers north of the North Bay.

But this is Canada in 2024, and every day there are things we never thought would darken our streets. Large cities, medium cities and hamlets. Nowhere seems safe.

Around 18:00 on Sunday, a 16-year-old girl was getting off the bus in Kobalt after work. Target: Home.

But there was someone waiting for him at the bus stop.

While crossing the road, a vehicle hit the beautiful brunette into a pile of rocks. CTV Northern Ontario reported.

According to a GoFundMe campaign for the victim and his familyThe driver jumped out of the vehicle and attacked the girl. They said the maniac started attacking the seriously injured young man using a machete.

During his bloodlust spree, the man cut off his left hand, broke his right arm and left it “hanging by ribbons,” his family says.

“He continued to maul him by hitting his body and head with the machete. He then fled, leaving her to die, and was handed over to the police by her mother,” a relative of the girl wrote on GoFundMe.

A nearby neighbor and his wife told CTV they heard screams and ran out to help as the suspect fled in his vehicle. The couple performed CPR until medical teams arrived.

Part of the victim’s severed arm was later found, the news outlet reported.

“Kaylie was taken to children’s hospital CHEO in Ottawa for treatment. She survived 16 hours of brain surgery and only time will tell the story of her journey,” the relative wrote on a GoFundMe that had raised more than $53,000 as of Wednesday morning. “Kaylie is doing well for now and her family is in Ottawa. “Kaylie is strong and resilient and so loved and we pray and hope for her recovery.”

OPP have not released the name of the 18-year-old defendant, who was later arrested near Haileybury. He is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and… ahem… breaching a conditional sentence order.

The GoFundMe, which names the victim and includes photos of him and his family, identifies him as the girl’s ex-boyfriend, Phillip Rivard-Gagnon.

According to CTV, the defendant had turned 18 just a week before the horrific attack. Of course, thanks to our vaunted Youth Criminal Justice Act in Canada, monsters under the age of 18 can commit all kinds of heinous crimes. Kill a dozen? See you in three years – max. And there are intellectuals in academia who believe that the age limit for rebellious youth should be raised to 20.

But if he is guilty as charged, then the accused of the Cobalt attack appears to have been stalled. It’s such a shame for him.

The young man will remain in custody and appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Haileybury on November 12. The charges against him were not tested in court.

In the GoFundMe message, the family pleads for some common sense to prevail while dealing with the alleged attacker.

“Finally, we ask that the community call the Haileybury Crown attorney’s office to argue that this is not another catch and release,” the family said.

“Phillip needs to stay behind bars to protect the rest of our innocent young people!”

Will this happen? Suspicious.

Horrors like these were once an anomaly in this country. These things are now woven into our fabric and people in high places are either unaware or simply don’t care.
