Man dead after Phoenix Police Department-involved shooting near 19th and South streets

PHOENIX — Phoenix police say a man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Monday night.

According to a police department spokesperson, officers were first called to check out a report of a home invasion in the neighborhood near 19th and South streets around 10 p.m. The caller reported that a person armed with a gun was trying to enter the house. .

Police officers arriving at the scene found a pickup truck matching the description of the suspect vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the driver did not stop.

During the police’s short pursuit of the vehicle, the driver crashed into the retaining wall in the area and the driver got out of the vehicle with two guns.

Police said the man brandished one of the firearms while trying to escape from officers, leading to the officer-involved shooting.

It was announced that the man, whose name was identified as 41-year-old Carlos Fregoso, was shot as a result of gunfire and died at the scene.

Two handguns were reportedly seized near Fregoso and an additional rifle was found inside the pickup truck.

The investigation continues.

It was the first of two shootings involving Phoenix police in about 12 hours. Phoenix officers responded to the incident early Tuesday morning. Shooting near 7th Avenue and Indian School Road.
