70-year-old woman found dead in river weeks after Helene hit North Carolina

INGALLS, NC (WBTV/Gray News) – A Tennessee woman who went missing during flooding in Helene has been found dead.

Avery County authorities said 70-year-old Charlene Wilber was identified as the deceased found on Oct. 23.

Deputies said they found Wilber’s body while conducting a search of the North Toe River in an area accessible only by foot.

The 70-year-old man had been missing since Sept. 27 from Buck Hill Campground, about 3 miles north of Ingalls.

Wilber was one of three missing people remaining in Avery County, according to authorities.

On Wednesday, state officials announced that Helene’s death toll in North Carolina had surpassed 100 people.
