Israeli football fans attacked: Amsterdam mayor condemns ‘hit and run’ attacks against Israeli football fans

Amsterdam native says he hosts Maccabi fansReleased at 10:44 am Greenwich Mean Time

An Amsterdam resident said he was sheltering six Maccabi Tel Aviv fans during last night’s violence.

Esther Voet, editor-in-chief of a Dutch Jewish weekly, lives in the city centre. When he saw footage of the violence, he offered his home to terrified Israeli fans through an app used by Jews and Israelis.

Initially, he told Israeli public broadcaster Kan 11 that fans were too afraid to leave their location, so a colleague took them to his house for safety.

“They had scary stories. They were really, really scared,” he says. “So I told them this is a Jewish house, you are safe here.”

He also says he heard numerous “explosions” throughout the night.

“The police say it was fireworks. I don’t know, but it sounded scary.”

Reflecting on the events, he says: “I never thought I would experience this,” adding that it felt like “a pogrom.”
