Veterans Day, celebrated every year on November 11, is approaching.

The day of honor began on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of the First World War, called Armistice Day. In 1938, November 11 became an official national holiday, and in 1954 its name was changed to Veterans Day to extend the honor to all U.S. veterans.

Because Veterans Day is one of 11 public federal holidays, many government offices, businesses, and organizations will be closed for this celebration.

Here’s a list of what’s open and closed on Veterans Day in Massachusetts.

What’s closed on Veterans Day?

  • All state, local and federal offices will be closed for Veterans Day.
  • Public schools in MA are always closed on Veterans Day. If it is not publicly available, check with the relevant school.
  • The United States Postal Service (USPS) regular mail delivery service will not operate on Veterans Day. United Postal Service (UPS) and FedEx will operate pickup and delivery services on modified schedules, but delays may occur due to USPS.
  • Banks are generally closed for Veterans Day, but online banking and ATM services will still be available.
  • Libraries will be closed for the holiday.
  • Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) It will not operate through Veterans Day weekend, stopping at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 and resuming regularly scheduled hours on Nov. 12.
  • Garbage collection is delayed by one day for the remainder of the week following the holiday.

What’s open on Veterans Day?

  • Most supermarkets, liquor stores, restaurants, fast food chains and retail chains will remain open on Veterans Day. Small businesses may choose to close, so it is best to contact the individual location.
  • The MBTA will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Veterans Day. Weekend holiday passes offering unlimited travel from November 9-11 are available for $10.
  • National Parks are open and free for outdoor exploration on holiday.
  • The exchange will continue to operate but will be subject to holiday schedules.
