Haris Rauf and Saim Ayub star as Pakistan end 7-year wait for ODI victory in Australia

Pakistan registered a historic 9-wicket win over Australia in the second ODI of the three-match series at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Friday, November 8. Fast bowlers Haris Rauf (5/29) and Shaheen Afridi (3/26) confirmed skipper Mohammad Rizwan’s decision by sending Australia packing for just 163 in 35 overs after electing to bowl first.

In reply, Pakistan comfortably chased down the target in 26.3 overs as Saim Ayub played a stunning knock of 82 (71) to guide his team to a 9-wicket win. The 22-year-old, playing just his second ODI, showed no reservations against the star-studded bowling attack of Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

The left-hander started his innings cautiously, scoring 15 off 30 balls, but allowed 11 balls to go free.This He was defeated by a six over Pat Cummins and went on to defeat Mitchell Starc for another 14 rounds in the next round. In fact, the young player killed himself when he was dropped by Zampa in the 47th minute and completed his half-century performance with 52 balls. The swashbuckling batsman looked set to reach his maiden century, blasting the ball to every corner of the Adelaide Oval.

He was unfortunately dismissed for 82 (71) as Pakistan lost the first wicket for 137 after 20.1 overs. Following his dismissal, Abdullah Shafique (64*) and Babar Azam (15*) took Pakistan home without further losses as they won the match by nine wickets, marking Australia’s first win in all formats after losing 11 consecutive matches since January 2017 .

Earlier in the day, Australia got off to a flying start with openers Jake Fraser McGurk (13 for 10) and Matthew Short (19 for 15) adding 20 runs in the first overs. However, Afridi quickly removed Fraser-McGurk as he was bowled out lbw in the third over. Short was let out in the fourth over after Afridi was dropped at fine leg, but the left-arm seamer made amends by catching him at cover point in the 7th over.This I left Australia on 41/2.

Following the dismissal, Josh Inglis joined Steve Smith at the crease and the pair added a quick 38 runs with a flurry of boundaries for the third wicket. The dangerous-looking stand was ripped apart from the start by Haris Rauf, who caught Inglis (18 off 25) on the leg side as he tried to pull the Pakistani speedster.

Marnus Labuschagne was next but could not progress as Rauf found his outside edge caught by skipper Rizwan behind the stumps. At the other end, Mohammad Hasnain came into the attack and took the big wicket of the well-set Steve Smith (35 off 48); he too tried to cut a wide delivery to Rizwan, who left Australia behind in every possible way. Trouble broke out at 101/5 after 21 overs.

After the first four outburst, Rauf too came back in the 26th over and struck straight away, finding Aaron Hardie’s edge behind the stumps which was once again caught by Rizwan. Rauf lifted his tail and continued to be between the wickets and took the big scalp of Glenn Maxwell, who cut the ball towards his stumps trying to pull the fast bowler.

It was Pat Cummins’ fifth scalp as the Australian skipper tried to pull a quick bouncer and a fine edge went straight into Rizwan’s gloves. In conclusion, The speedster recorded his second five-wicket haul in ODIs and was also named Player of the Match. Meanwhile, the series is level at 1-1 after the big win in the second ODI and the third and final ODI will be played on Sunday, November 10 at Perth Stadium, Perth.
