Seattle Seahawks’ DK Metcalf Could Still Post Career-Best Season After Returning

at this time Seattle Seahawks Following wide receiver DK Metcalf’s MCL sprain in Week 7, he was on pace for a career year in the team’s revamped offense. He was the third-leading receiver in the NFL through seven weeks of the season.

Metcalf was on the rise predictable based on vertical attack Ryan Grubb brought to the team from his time in Washington. The scheme has struggled greatly in the run game, mostly due to the offensive line, but has been at the top of the league in passing production this season due to deficiencies on the ground. Seattle’s star wide receiver took advantage of that.

Despite not appearing in the Seahawks’ last two games, Metcalf has 35 catches for 568 yards and three touchdowns. He and Jaxon Smith-Njigba rank 12th in the league in receiving yards despite playing in all nine games for Seattle.

Metcalf’s receiving production improves to 81.1 receiving yards per game with an average of five catches. In an offense loaded with talent, he was doing so with a target share of just 21.9 percent. That target share is at least two percentage points lower than each of the current top-5 receivers in receiving yards.

Grubb and quarterback Geno Smith were not directing targets at Metcalf. He’s been the team’s best pass catcher so far.

There’s still a chance Metcalf can surpass his career-high of 1,303 receiving yards in 2020 when he returns, most likely after the bye week. However, he will need to accumulate more yards through the air than he did before his injury. .

If Metcalf continues with his receiving yards and receiving averages per game, he would finish with 75 catches for 1,216 yards; None of these would be career highs for the second-round pick six years ago.

To match his 2020 receiving total, Metcalf would need to average 91.9 receiving yards per game on six catches. It would be even harder for him to surpass those totals, as he would need approximately 98 yards per game to reach 1,350 receiving yards.

This is possible, especially considering Metcalf’s performance before his injury. 2-4. He had a three-game stretch with over 100 receiving yards between weeks and threw for 99 yards in Week 7. Metcalf has reached double-digit goals in three games this season.

Seattle (4-5) has more pressing matters on its agenda than getting Metcalf to reach a milestone, but within the confines of the offense, this should be a reasonable sign. The Seahawks’ offense has scored at least 20 points in every game Metcalf has played this season, with his worst output of the season (10 points) coming in his first game off the bench.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said they are “optimistic” that Metcalf will return for the Week 11 game against the San Francisco 49ers after his bye week. Metcalf had three catches for 48 yards in Seattle’s first game against the Niners in Week 6.
