Parents Were Moving Their Daughter Out of Her Ex’s House After Breakup. Then He Opened Fire and Killed the Mother: Police

An Iowa mother died and her husband was seriously injured after her daughters’ ex-boyfriend allegedly shot them while helping her move out of her home after a breakup, authorities said.

Capt. Ryan Evans of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office tells PEOPLE that on Friday, Nov. 1, Des Moines police responded to a report of shots fired at a home on NW 51st Place at 5:24 p.m.

When they arrived, they found a woman, Ruth Robison, 45, and her husband, Tony Ray Robison, 52, with gunshot wounds to the head, Evans said.

According to criminal complaints obtained by the authorities, Hamza Smajlovic allegedly shot the couple with a 9 mm gun. Des Moines Register and NBC affiliate who 13.

They were taken to the hospital where Ruth Robison died. Her husband survived but is in critical condition.

Police arrested Smajlovic, 24, and charged him with first-degree murder, attempted murder and intimidation with a dangerous weapon, according to online court records.

“Obviously this is a tragic situation involving a woman trying to get out of a relationship. It escalated into a more dangerous situation that resulted in the death of her mother,” Evans told PEOPLE.

Evans said Smajlovic and the Robison family’s 24-year-old daughter, Jasmyne, had just separated and was helping her parents move their belongings from the house where they lived together.

Police allege in the criminal complaint that Smajlovic shot Robison in the head and also shot her husband in the head. Des Moines Register reports.

Smajlovic remains held in the Polk County Jail on a $750,000 cash-only bond, according to online court records. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 12. It’s unclear whether he has retained an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
