Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin vows to work with Trump and calls for less division

Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin vowed in her reelection victory speech Thursday to work with President-elect Donald Trump whenever possible, but also vowed to fight him to protect the national health care law and abortion rights.

Baldwin was narrowly re-elected to a third term against Eric Hovde, a Republican businessman backed by Trump. Hovde has yet to lose in a race where the margin was close enough to call for a recount.

“We deserve a politics with less insults, less division, less hatred and fewer lies. Actually, there are no lies,” Baldwin told a group of supporters at the steamfitters union training center.

Baldwin defeated Hovde by a margin of just under 29,000, or 0.9%, according to unofficial results. State law allows losers of races that are within 1 percentage point of the winner to seek a recount, but Hovde has not yet said whether he will do so.

Hovde’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.
