After the accident was reported around 20:00, police vehicles and ambulances were dispatched to the scene at the Western Road junction.

Local resident Andy Fraser witnessed the incident and said the road was taped off and remained closed all night.

“You weren’t allowed to walk to the Tesco Esso garage, which closed early,” he said.

“The coroner was at the scene. There were a couple of ambulances and maybe three or four police cars. I hope everyone involved is okay.”

Over the years Andy says he has witnessed numerous accidents along the busy road.

“One common cause is cars heading into town and waiting to turn onto Western Road,” he added.

“Other drivers were on autopilot and, without even realizing it, they dived into the waiting car.

“It’s also a blind spot when leaving Western Road, which causes accidents.”

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “Crews assessed and treated a patient at the scene before taking him to Kings College Hospital for further medical treatment.”

Police have been contacted for further information.
