Man arrested Friday in Rutherford Co. on burglary and drug possession charges

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, NC (FOX Carolina) – The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man on burglary and drug possession charges Friday after he fled the scene of the robbery on foot.

Deputies report the A-Crew Road Patrol Unit responded to the area near Price Cemetery Road in response to a call reporting a suspect stealing multiple items, including a loaded firearm.

Deputies say a suspect who attempted to leave the area on foot was captured and taken into custody near Duncans Creek Road.

According to deputies, the suspect was identified as 32-year-old Charles Matthew Kelly of Cleveland County and was seen wearing a belt/holster with a loaded magazine in his pocket that he had previously stolen.

Deputies reported Kelly also had the following:

  • approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine
  • two dosage units of Lorazepam
  • nine dosage units Tramadol
  • four pipes
  • multiple syringe

Deputies said Kelly took them to a nearby wooded area and disposed of the stolen firearm.

Kelly was accused of:

  • firearm theft
  • criminal possession of a firearm
  • possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute methamphetamine
  • simple possession schedule IV controlled substance lorazepam
  • simple possession schedule IV controlled substance tramadol
  • possession of drug paraphernalia
  • misdemeanor theft

Kelly was also already wanted on two outstanding charges, including failure to appear in a stolen motor vehicle and failure to appear to a resisting public officer, deputies said.

Kelly is being held on an $80,000 secured bond.
