2024 Election in Arizona: What we know now

The only thing politicians knew for sure heading into election night was that it would be a close night.

From state races to the White House, Arizona’s purple state status is in full effect. It’s not like sometimes Arizona turns blue and sometimes Arizona turns red. That’s still a possibility, though. But the state is split almost down the middle.

Heading into Tuesday and Wednesday, the gap in the presidential race was less than 1 percentage point, making Arizona once again the closest state in the country for now. Republicans also destroyed the narrow Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate, but Democrat Ruben Gallego appeared headed for victory in Arizona.

Fox News has already called the presidential race for Donald Trump. Democrats fared reasonably well in Arizona, at least according to unofficial results released Tuesday night. They could win key races in the Legislature and pick up two congressional seats.

Although vote counting was slow, Election Day went relatively smoothly. With more ballots to be counted and a mandatory hand-count audit scheduled for Saturday, much of Arizona’s political future is still uncertain.
