STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The July death of 1-month-old Joseph Heben Jr. of Tottenville was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner.

An autopsy revealed the baby was extremely malnourished and dehydrated, leading to his death being ruled a homicide, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

According to a statement from the Deputy Commissioner of the New York Police Department, police were called to Staten Island University Hospital in Prince’s Bay around 7 a.m. on July 20, where hospital staff told officers that Heben was unconscious and unresponsive while being transported to the medical facility by private vehicles.
