2024 election updates: Obama criticizes comedian’s Puerto Rican remarks at Trump rally

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz delivered a focused message aimed at rallying crowds of young voters as he picked Vice President Kamala Harris in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Monday.

With just over a week until Election Day, at an appearance near the University of Michigan campus, Walz gave a brief and thoughtful speech supporting his running mate’s candidacy.

“Look, on her first day — from prosecutor to district attorney to California attorney general to United States senator to vice president — Kamala Harris had only one client: the people,” Walz said.

He also benefited from his “coach” persona from time to time. “We’re now going to take this thing through the next eight days, one inch, one meter at a time, one door at a time, one phone call at a time,” Walz said. “(Because) one of them is door knocking and one of these interactions — because one or two extra votes for the district in the state of Michigan will make Kamala Harris president of the United States.”

Walz directly acknowledged the anxiety young first-time voters may feel during this election cycle.

“Here’s the good news: If you’re feeling any of these worries, this nervousness, this anxiety, we have a solution for you. Get out there and vote for Kamala Harris. I know I did this with my son, who voted for the first time last Wednesday, and it works,” he told the mostly student crowd.

This was Walz’s first joint rally with Harris since they appeared in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the Democratic National Convention in August.
