Wesley Bell wins ‘Squad’ member Cori Bush’s House seat in Missouri

St.Louis District Attorney Wesley Bell wins the 2024 election. of missouri 1st congressional district on Tuesday after being easily defeated Republican Andrew Jones.

Associated Press Bell, who called the race for Bell at 9:19 p.m., received 75.9% of the votes to Jones’ 18.4% as of 3:02 a.m., while polls closed at 8 p.m. Eastern time. Libertarian candidate Rochelle Riggins received 3.3 percent of the votes, Green Party candidate Don Fitz received 1.7 percent, and Good Party candidate Blake Ashby received 0.7 percent.

Bell made national headlines in August. Ousted Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO)one of two “Squad” Democrats to lose their primaries this cycle. Similar to his Democratic opponent, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Bell was heavily supported by pro-Israel groups that targeted Bush for his views on the war in Gaza.

The dismissals of Bowman and Bush sent shockwaves among House Democrats as the party grappled with backlash over the lack of solid support behind the Jewish state.

The Missouri congresswoman has also faced backlash from her constituents over her stances on public safety and drug decriminalization, as well as her voting record in Congress and the Justice Department investigation into paying her husband as a security guard. He denied any wrongdoing.

Bell’s win helped preserve the blue castle held by Democrats as the party tries to flip its House majority. The fight for the House will likely remain unknown for days, especially as the majority of the 22 races remain very close to call.
