Latest politics: Starmer reacts to US election results as Badenoch prepares for first PMQs as Tory leader | Politics News

Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, described the US election result as “a dark, dark day for people all over the world”.

The result of the presidential race has not yet been officially confirmed, but Donald Trump has declared victory.

Trump needs 270 electoral votes to win and currently has 266 votes to Kamala Harris’ 219.

Sir Ed said: “This is a dark, dark day for people around the world. The world’s largest economy and most powerful military will be led by a dangerous, destructive demagogue.”

“It is more urgent than ever to fix Britain’s broken relationship with the EU.

“To protect ourselves from the damage Trump will do, we must strengthen trade and defense cooperation across Europe.

“Now more than ever, we must defend core liberal values such as equality, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, both at home and around the world.”
