When do polls close?

Kentucky (eight delegate votes) will be the first state to close its polls at 6 p.m. Eastern time.

Polls will close between 7pm and 9pm on most of the eastern half of the country, while on the West Coast, polls will close at 11pm eastern time.

The last states to close will be Hawaii (four electoral votes) and Alaska (three electoral votes), which will close their polls at midnight and 1 a.m., respectively.

When will the 2024 Election Day results be announced?

In the past, Election Day results were often announced just a few hours after polls closed. But recent elections have required longer wait times for all votes to be counted and the winner declared.

One reason for this is the prevalence of absentee voting by mail. Fourteen states legally require mail-in ballots to be counted only after polls close on Election Day.

The first election results of the night will probably start to be announced after 19.00. The results of some critical swing states, such as Pennsylvania (19 electoral votes), likely won’t be released until much later.

In 2020, news outlets called the election in favor of President Joe Biden four days after Election Day. In 2016, the race was called in Trump’s favor at 3 a.m. the day after Election Day.

The closer the election gets, the longer it will take to know the result. Unless both candidates have an unexpected landslide victory, the winner of the 2024 presidential election may not be known until a day or so after Election Day.

What are the key states to watch on Election Day?

The 2024 presidential election is expected to be extremely close, with 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency.

There are seven states (Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada) that are considered adjacent states. Experts will be watching these states closely as they determine who will be the next president.

Here is the date the polls will close in each of the swing states.

19:00 Eastern – Georgia (16 electoral votes)

7:30 PM Eastern – North Carolina (16 electoral votes)

8:00 PM Eastern – Pennsylvania (except Cambria County, which will close at 10:00 PM Eastern) electronic voting system software problems)

9 p.m. Eastern – Michigan (15 electoral votes), Arizona (11 electoral votes) and Wisconsin (10 electoral votes).

10:00 PM Eastern – Nevada (six electoral votes)
