Latest US elections: Harris and Trump tie the first official result of the election as voting day begins for millions of Americans | US News

It’s election day in America.

Today, the country will decide between two very different visions put forth by Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Yesterday, Ms. Harris returned to the positive message seen in the early days of her campaign, emphasizing turning a new page in the politics of division and embracing a new generation of leadership.

Mr. Trump, meanwhile, promised “the most extraordinary economic growth the world has ever seen,” touted the harshness of his tariffs on Mexico, repeated anti-immigrant rhetoric and hurled personal insults at his rival.

A large number of voters (more than 81 million) have already voted early, but millions of voters went to the polls today.

Security was put on high alert at these polling stations, with snipers, barbed wire fences and bulletproof vests deployed.

Nearly 40% of election officials reportedly faced threats or harassment.

Meanwhile, the FBI warned that Russians were trying to disrupt the election and sow fear with fake news of election fraud.

The last celebrity support of the campaign took place yesterday; Mick Jagger backed Ms Harris, while Joe Rogan also backed Mr Trump late last night.

The polls are still neck-and-neck and all eyes will be on the swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

But a recent poll shows Ms. Harris with a three-point lead in deep-red Iowa, reminding us that surprise upsets are always on the table.
