REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – A former Rehoboth Beach City Commissioner was arrested after police say he stole campaign signs.

According to Rehoboth Beach Police, last week officers received a complaint that a candidate’s campaign signs had been removed multiple times.

Police launched an investigation and identified the suspect as 78-year-old Richard Byrne, who they said was in possession of several of the stolen signs.

Byrne was arrested and charged with two counts of Theft Under $1,500 and two counts of Criminal Mischief Under $1,000. He was released on his own volition.

Byrne previously served as commissioner of the City of Rehoboth Beach.
