Amish boy shot dead while hunting squirrel, soldiers say

MEADVILLE, Pa. (Gray News) – An 11-year-old Amish boy was shot in the head while hunting squirrels with friends on Saturday, according to a police report from the Pennsylvania State Police.

Members of the Amish community told police that three boys participated in the squirrel hunt and two tried to hit the animal with BB guns.

According to troopers, a round was fired from a .22-caliber rifle by one of the hunters, missing the squirrel, and a follow-up round was fired as the squirrel came toward it.

After the last shot, another child saw the 11-year-old lying motionless on the ground and went to get help from an adult working in the field.

The child was taken to the children’s hospital. He died on Sunday.

The police report did not indicate whether any charges would be filed.
