Giancarlo suffered second, third and fourth degree burns on 35 percent of his body, including his arms, torso and legs.

That night, he was airlifted to the burn unit at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital.

Eileen met him there, followed by Julio.

Eileen said: “Doctors sedated Giancarlo to help relieve the pain.

“They also placed a tube in his nose to make sure he was getting enough nutrition.

“After a month, he started smiling again and even stood up in his hospital crib.”

While Eileen spent every day in the hospital next to Giancarlo, Julio was working as a freight supervisor in a company. airline company.

Their older children, Helen Alana, 16, and Everly Meadow, two, stayed with their parents.

Giancarlo was finally discharged in April after being hospitalized for more than six weeks.

But two weeks later, at his second follow-up appointment, doctors were unhappy with the way his burns were healing and he was readmitted to the hospital for another skin graft surgery on his right leg.

Then in May, Giancarlo returned to the hospital to have another skin graft in the same area.

Once home, he endured daily physical and occupational therapy, including helping him bend his knees by taking steps.

Eileen and Julio had to massage their burns with a medicated cream several times a day.

Eileen said: “We were constantly going back and forth to hospital. It was really hard.”

In June, Giancarlo took his first steps at home, and the following month he was fitted with compression garments to help reduce scarring.

He will start laser treatment in January.

Eileen said: “We are so proud of her resilience.

“He has lost mobility in his right leg and his burns often cause him a lot of discomfort.
