At least 23 people were killed and 19 injured when a bus crashed into a gorge, authorities in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand said Monday. Hindustan Times newspaper.

It was thought that there were at least 42 passengers on the bus, which left Garhwal in the north for Ramnagar.

The accident occurred in the mountainous Almora district. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said rescue teams were sent to the region.

State government official Vineet Pal said an official investigation had been launched into the incident but preliminary reports suggested the bus was old and dilapidated.
