Crocodile owner Albert issues dark warning following death of squirrel P’Nut

New York man pet crocodile Albert confiscated by government authorities is warning pet owners that they may come for you after a squirrel rescuer’s beloved friend, P’Nut, was also captured and killed.

“I think there is a bigger plan behind all of this,” Tony Cavallaro told The Post on Sunday. “They’re going after innocent people to see how far they can get from us.”

Cavallaro said he was appalled to hear about the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s treatment of P’Nut, a rehabilitated squirrel kept as a pet by New Yorker Mark Longo.

The agency raided Longo’s home in Pine City on Wednesday and seized the animal, along with his pet raccoon Fred. The DEC said they must kill wild domestic animals to test them for rabies because they interact closely with humans.

“It’s really sad that this squirrel didn’t do anything,” Cavallaro said, adding that he knew full well how powerless Longo felt during the DEC raid.

“I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. There’s nothing they can do,” he said of Longo and his wife.

Cavallaro has been fighting the DEC for nearly eight months since Albert was taken away from him in March.

The alligator, which Cavallaro had owned for 34 years and kept in an elaborate pen in his own home, was later transported to an “adventure park” in Texas.

Cavallaro is now trying to get Albert transferred to at least a shelter he trusts.

As for the DEC, Cavallaro has nothing but disgust and distrust.

“They are just a dirty, dirty organization. “I don’t know what they are trying to do to us, but there is no justification,” he said.

The DEC said it had to take Albert because it was illegal for Cavallaro to keep him; It vehemently denies this claim and claims that it tried repeatedly to renew the long-term permit for Albert, but the agency refused to respond for years.

Cavallaro said the agency’s treatment of Longo was all too familiar, saying he was treated like a “terrorist” during the five-hour raid, and recalled how armed officers smashed his home while raiding his home for Albert.

Longo had been caring for P’Nut for seven years after saving him when he was a baby when his mother was hit by a car.

He kept the squirrel only because it would not leave once he regained his health; thus P’Nut became a semi-pet, loved not only by Longo, but also by the nearly 3 million people who follow him on social media.

But all that came crashing down on Wednesday when the DEC came and took P’Nut and Fred. These animals, and not other animals on Longo’s property, were targeted because they lived in the house.

Both animals were later killed by the DEC due to the danger of rabies and wild animals living with humans, state officials said. An agent claimed that P’Nut also bit his hands during the raid.
