Harris vows to ‘turn the page’ on divisive policies, Trump confident of election victory

With just over 24 hours until Tuesday’s election day, it was a busy Sunday for the two main candidates in the US presidential race.

Both Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump held campaign events in key battleground states that are expected to decide the outcome of the election.

Harris campaigned in Michigan as Trump stormed into Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia.

Harris promised during a rally in East Lansing that she would “turn the page on a decade of politics driven by fear and division.”

“We’re done with this and we’re tired,” he told the crowd of supporters.

“You all know what we said: We’re not going back. We’re not going back. We’re not going back because ours is a fight for the future.”

Harris called the upcoming election “one of the most important elections of our lifetime” and expressed confidence that she would win the race for the White House.

He also reiterated his commitment to protecting women’s reproductive rights and said he would “proudly sign this legislation” when the day comes when Congress passes a bill to restore such freedoms nationwide.

But during a campaign stop in Detroit, Harris refused to say how she voted for measures that would reverse criminal justice reforms approved in recent years in her home state of California.

“I’m not going to talk about the vote on this,” he said, adding that he didn’t want to “create an endorsement one way or another.”

If passed, the initiative, known as Proposition 36, would make shoplifting a felony for repeat offenders and increase penalties for some drug charges, including those involving the synthetic opioid fentanyl.

Supporters said the initiative was needed to close loopholes in existing laws that make it difficult for law enforcement to punish thieves and drug dealers.

But opponents, including Democratic state leaders and social justice groups, said the law would disproportionately jail poor people and those with substance use problems rather than targeting the ringleaders.

Harris’ decision not to publicly state her position on the high-profile initiative could leave her open to criticism that Trump is soft on crime, as well as criticism from some left-leaning voters who want her to speak out strongly against what they perceive her to be. as relentless anti-crime efforts.

Meanwhile, Trump confidently talked about his election victory at his rally in Kinston, North Carolina.

“Because we have such a huge lead. All we have to do is come out on Tuesday and vote, vote, vote. We’re going to win this,” he said.

But poll watchers suggest Trump and Harris remain neck-and-neck in North Carolina and six other swing states.

Trump also criticized the Biden administration for its response to Hurricane Helene, which devastated North Carolina in September and killed at least 100 people.

“I also want to send our prayers to everyone in North Carolina who is still recovering from this incredible hurricane and its magnitude. Hurricane Helene, Kamala’s response to the hurricane was a disgrace and a betrayal,” he said.

He also vowed to impose tariffs on countries that “hurt us” and denounced longtime GOP leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, who left office in January after nearly two decades of leadership.

At a rally in Lititz, Pennsylvania, earlier in the day, Trump invoked familiar, unproven claims of voter fraud, claiming fraud was already underway in the state.

“From what I understand… they found that 2,600 ballots were cast by the same hand, meaning the same handwriting, the same hand, the same everything, all with the same pen, the same pen. Then they go and say, ‘This is a conspiracy theorist.’ It’s terrible what’s happening to our country.” It’s an event.”

Trump’s campaign has vowed to deploy legal teams across the country to file lawsuits over alleged voter fraud and is already pursuing legal action in the state of Georgia; The ballot papers eliminate allegations of “illegal election management” after some districts kept polling places open over the weekend for early voting.
