Bye week can’t come soon enough badgers Iowa scored another rushing goal with 1:15 left in the game, this one from Jazun Patterson. The Hawkeyes finished with 329 yards on the night, their third straight time scoring more than 40 points at home. The Badgers’ run defense has absolutely no answer to the Hawkeyes’ rushing attack, which resulted in a miserable 42-10 loss to Iowa.

The Badgers force a 3rd-and-6 from the Iowa 27, but any chance of getting back into the game disappears as Sullivan and Ortwerth combine for a 52-yard reception, giving Iowa a first down at the UW 21. Two plays later, Sullivan ends the game with the ball up the middle to the 1. It takes a few plays, but Johnson scores his third touchdown of the night and Iowa’s offensive line continues its dominance, taking a 35-10 lead.

The Badgers finally got a big play on 3rd and 10, with Locke hitting Vinny Anthony on a 33-yard run. A nice second throw to Anthony from 15 yards puts the Badgers at the 20 yard line. The quarter ends with Walker’s two carries producing seven yards to set up a 3rd-and-3 from the 13. After a tackle for loss by Walker, The Badgers went on fourth down and Locke found Williams for a 14-yard TD on fourth down. UW trailed 28-10 with 14:12 left in the game.

The situation for Brayden Locke and the Badgers only gets worse. On 3rd and 5 from the Wisconsin 40, Locke is intercepted by Nick Jackson, who returns it 28 yards to the UW 12. Two plays later Sullivan finds Jacob Gill in the end zone for a 7-yard score and the Hawkeyes lead 28-4. 3. Locke was 9 of 20 for 72 yards and two interceptions with 4:17 to play in the third quarter.

Iowa will continue to run the ball until the Badgers get used to stopping the ball. The first eight plays are rushing and they produce over 60 yards. Iowa has nine plays on the ground that produce more than 10 yards. (Badgers have two). On the 10th straight run, Johnson scored from nine yards out and the Hawkeyes led 21-3. Johnson has 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while the Hawkeyes have 238 yards rushing as a team.

Possession of the ball to start the second half is another opportunity for the Badgers to get close, but after just one first down and 18 yards on the ground the Badgers must punt again. Locke was 8 of 18 passing for just 68 yards, but did not throw in that series.

Kaleb Johnson has 92 yards rushing and the Hawkeyes have 152 yards rushing as a team. Badgers have only 114 yards of total offense

UW got its first third down conversion with about a minute left in the half on Locke’s 4-yard run to the Iowa 43. But an incompletion, a chop block and a false start set up 2nd and 30 at the Wisconsin 37. Another negative play sets up 3rd and 33 with 28 seconds left in the 34th. The Badgers finally get the ball to the 10 and enter the locker room down 11 points.

Nyzier Fourqurean’s interception on Zach Ortwerth prevents a first down and gives the Badgers a much-needed stop. Unfortunately, a 57-yard punt gives the Badgers faceoff field position at the 6-yard line. Darrion Dupree’s 13-yard completion puts the Badgers clear of the goal line, but another incomplete third-down pass and a long pass force another punt. However, Iowa gets just three yards on three plays, including two completions, and the Badgers have a chance to score before the half ends, starting from their own 30 following a 50-plus yard punt with 2:45 left.

Another three-and-out for the Badgers after Locke’s third throw to Williams went out of the receiver’s hands and fell incomplete. The Badgers were yet to convert a third point (0-on-3) with 7:15 left in the half.

A personal foul penalty on Aaron Witt and a 30-yard run by Kamari Moulton helped set up Iowa’s 80-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 16-yard run by Johnson. The game suddenly turns away from Wisconsin as the Hawkeyes extend their lead to 14-3.

The Badgers gain just one yard in three plays and win a punt from 26 yards. Atticus Bertrams’ 42-yard punt goes up after an illegal block on the return by the Hawkeyes.

On 1st and 10 from the UW 32, Johnson carries the ball for 10 yards and gets another first down. They call his number again and Johnson takes it 16 yards on his next touch, taking the ball to the 5. On third-and-goal, Sullivan covers the ball and is pushed into the end zone for the touchdown. The Hawkeyes took a 7-3 lead with 12:45 left in the half.

After a 7-yard completion by Pauling and a 5-yard run by Walker, Locke makes a costly mistake as his throw is picked up in open field by Deshaun Lee and returns to the Iowa 47. After a five-yard run, Sullivan’s pass to Jacob Gill gained 16 yards and the Hawkeyes were back in action at the end of the quarter.

They received the ball at the Iowa 25 and moved the ball to the UW 38. The Badgers suffered two losses and got off to a false start at Iowa, kicking an upright field goal from 56 yards but missed by Drew Stevens.

Brayden Locke’s 10-yard throw to Will Pauling gets the Badgers off to a promising start, but after a seven-yard run by Tawee Walker, the Badgers are flagged for a false start. On 3rd-and-8, Iowa returned the favor by committing consecutive delay of game penalties to give the Badgers a first down, but Locke was later sacked for a five-yard loss at the 43-yard line. But one play later, an unsportsmanlike penalty gave the Badgers another first down at the Iowa 43. Two plays later, Locke struck out C.J. Williams for a lead of 18 and a first down at 25. But another false start and an incomplete throw near the end sets up 2nd and 15 from the Iowa 30. A quick throw to Vinny Anthony outside picks up nine yards. On 3rd-and-6, Locke’s pass to the receiver went wide and Nathanial Vakos kicked a 38-yard field goal to give the Badgers a 3-0 lead with 6:15 left in the first quarter.

It’s a “blackout” situation in Iowa City as most fans wear the Hawkeyes’ dominant colors as the two Big Ten rivals play in their sixth league game of the season. Quarterback Brendan Sullivan comes out completing a pass for nine yards after receiving Iowa’s kick, but after two runs by Kaleb Johnson pick up a total of nine yards, an incomplete pass on 3rd-and-1 forces a punt and the Badgers take control on their own is taking. 20.

Wisconsin-Iowa football predictions

Mark Stewart: This makes for a great comeback game for Wisconsin. The Badgers didn’t play badly last week, but they weren’t good enough to win. However, the experience of facing a top-three opponent prepares UW nicely for the rigors of winning on the road. Wisconsin 24, Iowa 20

J.R. Radcliffe: This looks like a big game for quarterback Braedyn Locke, who has struggled to finish a game this year without committing at least one turnover. Is he this program’s quarterback of the future? If so, this could be an opportunity to showcase that to lead Wisconsin in a tough but winnable road game against a team that is down on its own quarterbacks. The defense has already slowed down a strong rushing opponent (Rutgers), but Iowa is the Big Ten’s best in that department, led by Kaleb Johnson. That’s a close call, too, but I think there’s a little more to it in Iowa. Iowa 28, Wisconsin 23.
