A man shot by police during an alleged attempted robbery in Haddon Township early Sunday morning has died, the New Jersey attorney general’s office said.

The Attorney General’s Office said Haddon Township police responded to a call just after 1 a.m. regarding an attempted burglary at an apartment complex on West Crystal Lake Boulevard in Westmont.

Police found a man with a knife in the stairwell. The AG’s office said an officer fired his gun, hitting the man. Officers administered medical aid at the scene and the man was later transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. According to the statement made by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the police found a knife at the scene.

The identities of the police officer and the man who was shot were not released.

The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office continues its investigation into the incident.
