Claremont College to host new location of Glenorchy Sports Center

November 3, 2024

Nick Duigan, Minister for Sport and Events

Claremont College will be home to the brand new, $28 million purpose-built Glenorchy Sports Centre.

Minister for Sport and Events Nick Duigan said this investment in critical sports and community infrastructure will deliver a four-court indoor facility.

“It has been designed to accommodate a variety of sports including basketball, netball, volleyball and futsal; changing rooms and facilities for players, visitors, staff and volunteers; a multi-purpose space; and parking,” Minister Duigan said.

“Increasing community participation in recreation and sport is the driving force behind this development.

“Sports facilities like this play a vital role in supporting a healthier, more connected community. They encourage physical activity, which is crucial for maintaining health, reducing the risk of chronic disease and improving mental health.”

A comprehensive evaluation process led to the selection of the flat suitable for this purpose.

“We have worked closely with Glenorchy City Council to deliver a location that meets the needs of the community and long-term development objectives,” Minister Duigan said.

“Glenorchy Sports Center will not only serve Claremont College and the local community, but will also enhance the quality sports facilities in the northern suburbs.”

Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, the Government will continue to support local sports by investing in the facilities communities need.

It is important that the Government identifies partnership opportunities to expand the benefits that State schools provide to their communities.

“This development means Claremont College students and staff, as well as the wider community, will have access to high-quality, multi-purpose indoor sports facilities,” Minister Duigan said.

“I look forward to seeing Glenorchy Sports Center take shape.”

The Principal of Claremont College and the School Union have provided support in principle to co-locate the new Glenorchy Sports Center in an underutilized area of the Claremont College site.

Construction is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed in 2026.
