Horse dies after competing in the Breeders’ Cup; PETA made a harsh statement

A horse died Breeders’ Cup Saturday, shortly after the race at Del Mar Speedway in Del Mar, California.

Jayarebe, one 3 year old boy from FranceHe collapsed while galloping off the track towards the stables after running the $5 million Turf, a 1.5-mile race.

The Breeders’ Cup said Jayarebe suffered a “cardiac event.”

“During the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar, Jayarebe (France) suffered what appeared to be a heart attack while galloping. A team of veterinary specialists led by Dr. Brent Cassady responded immediately, but unfortunately passed his jockey in a statement from the race. It was stated that Sean Levey was not injured.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the many fans Jayarebe had connections to and whose lives she touched.”

The colt was trained by Brian Meehan and owned by Iraj Parvizi and finished seventh out of 13 horses.

Upon the news, PETA released a statement saying it wanted a “full investigation” into the matter.

“Another dead horse on the biggest race day of the year, and it shouldn’t be buried as a footnote in the results,” said PETA Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA is demanding a full investigation into the death of Thoroughbred Jayarebe on the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Turf, as well as the release of all veterinary records, treatments the horse received during international transportation and quarantine, and the full autopsy report.

“He was only three years old, not even physically mature, and there should be no reason for a healthy young horse to fall to his death.”

Horse safety became a hot topic again last year after multiple deaths at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, in the weeks and even hours before the event. The track paused racing due to a staggering number of deaths.

The state of California underwent several protocol changes following more than 30 deaths in Santa Anita in 2019.

Last year, Practical Movement He died just days before he was due to compete in last year’s Breeders’ Cup. He was also scratched from the 2023 Kentucky Derby.
